Live crawfish in Los Angeles are not as rare as the internet says
The advice you will find is mostly a few years old and mostly written by people who tried supermarkets. Supermarket seafood counters here really do carry crawfish frozen or already cooked, and a Cajun restaurant will not sell you a live pound to take home. That is where "you have to ship them in" comes from, and it is out of date. The Armenian, Russian and Greek markets around Glendale and the Valley have sold live crawfish by the pound for years, and we keep ours in a tank and drive them to you.
The three ways to get live crawfish here, and what each costs you
Overnight freight from Louisiana is real and it works: you order a 15 to 40 pound sack days ahead, it arrives chilled and half asleep, and you pay for the box and the plane whether you wanted that much crawfish or not. A restaurant boil is the opposite — fast, portioned, and already cooked, which is no use if the boil itself is the evening you had planned. The third way is buying live, locally, by the pound: you choose the weight, you cook them the same day, and nothing spent the night in a cargo hold.
How near is near
The kitchen is at Sun Valley, 91352, and we drive out from there across 41 cities and neighbourhoods — the whole Valley, Glendale, Burbank, the Eastside, the Westside, and past the county line when the order is worth the run. Delivery is $15 for every 15 miles from our kitchen, free over $600, priced by the distance from that kitchen rather than by a flat fee, so being close to us is worth something. Minimum three pounds when crawfish are ordered on their own.
Four questions worth asking before you buy live crawfish anywhere
Are they alive right now, or arriving on a truck later this week? What is the minimum — a pound, three pounds, or a whole sack? When exactly can I have them, given that they must be cooked the day they arrive? And how are they packed for the trip: cool and damp with air, or sealed in a bag of water, which is the fastest way to lose half of them. Ask us the same four at (747) 488-9441 and you will get four straight answers.
What we boil
Every order ships with gloves, crab crackers, scissors, a table cover and a shrimp deveiner.
Questions we get asked
Can I buy live crawfish near me in Los Angeles?
Yes. We deliver live crawfish across 41 LA cities and neighbourhoods from a kitchen in Sun Valley, by the pound at $35, with a three-pound minimum. Call (747) 488-9441 and we will tell you what is in the tank right now.
Is it true that live crawfish are hard to find in Los Angeles?
It is out of date. Supermarket counters here do mostly sell crawfish frozen or cooked, which is where the advice comes from, but live crawfish have been sold by the pound in the Armenian and Russian markets around Glendale and the Valley for years — and we deliver them live across the city.
How fast can I get live crawfish today?
Same day, when they are in the tank — we cook and drive between 11 AM and 11 PM, from 10 AM at weekends. Against an overnight shipment from Louisiana, which needs to be ordered days ahead and arrives when the courier arrives, that is the whole difference. Call (747) 488-9441 to check stock before you plan the evening around it.
Do I have to buy a whole sack?
No. A sack is how the Louisiana shippers sell — 15 to 40 pounds, whether you need it or not. We sell by the pound with a three-pound minimum when crawfish are ordered on their own, and no minimum at all when they come inside a set.
How do I keep live crawfish alive until I boil them?
Keep them cool, damp and out of standing water — in the cooler or the bag they came in, with air — and cook them the same day. Sealed plastic and a tub of tap water are the two fastest ways to lose them.
