Santa Monica is the far western end of our map and we still drive it. All five ZIPs: 90401 downtown by the Promenade, 90402 north of Montana, 90403 through Wilshire Montana, 90404 the blocks in between, 90405 for Ocean Park and Sunset Park. On a summer Friday, order earlier. The 405 decides that, not us.

Orders out of Santa Monica are mostly for an occasion rather than a Tuesday. A birthday in a Sunset Park backyard. A family Sunday in 90402. A crew that just wrapped near the Promenade and wants a table of shells instead of another catering tray. The weeknight version is smaller and steady: two pounds of crawfish, a pound of shrimp, corn and chickpeas, eaten standing up.

ZIP codes we deliver to in Santa Monica

One freeway, the 405, from Sun Valley over the Sepulveda Pass and down toward the beach traffic. Twenty-four miles, typically 38 minutes, and exactly why we will not put a clock on it. There are two gambles on this one, not one. The Pass is the first. The beach is the second: past the 10 interchange the whole Westside is pointed at the ocean, and a July Friday can add twenty minutes between Wilshire and Ocean Park. The last stretch is surface streets, Lincoln or Fourth and then a numbered street, where every space at the curb is permit-only after six.

Every tray is sealed at the pot and rides out in an insulated carrier, so the drive costs the boil as little heat as it can.

Your boil, your call

Pick a heat level, from No Heat to LA Inferno. Then salt: light, regular or extra. Every item on the menu is finished the way you asked, not the way the pot ran that night.

By six the fog is usually back over Ocean Park and it stops feeling like a beach town. That is the hour a hot boil starts making sense here. Sunset Park has the backyards and the folding tables. The old bungalows off Main Street have kitchens too small to boil three pounds of crab in. North of Montana there is a dining room and no appetite for scrubbing a pot afterwards. Nobody has guest parking, so the driver calls from the curb.

What we boil

Every order ships with gloves, crab crackers, scissors, a table cover and a shrimp deveiner.

Questions people from Santa Monica ask

When are crawfish in season, and can I get them year-round?

Not year-round. Greek crawfish are seasonal and the supply moves through the year, so call (747) 488-9441 and ask what is in the tank today. When they are in, they stay alive until your order lands. When they are not, snow crab and shrimp carry the same boil, which is what most Ocean Park tables order anyway.

What should I order for a birthday in a Sunset Park backyard?

Tell us the headcount and we build to it. For eight around a folding table, a set plus extra corn and a jar of chickpeas is the usual shape, because the sides keep it from being all shell. Order the boil, pick the cake up on Main Street, and there is nothing left for you to cook.

One guest cannot handle heat and another is allergic to shellfish. What now?

Heat is set per item, so order one tray at No Heat and the second wherever the rest of the table lives; salt is chosen separately too. The allergy is a different answer. One pot, one seasoning, and the corn goes in with the shells, so we cannot promise a safe tray. Feed that guest from Montana Avenue.
